ABC TV Beehive removal

In October 2021, we were privileged to have Jennifer Nichols and a team from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation join us for a couple of days of filming for a story aired on ABC's flagship rural program, Landline.

We visited one of our apiary sites at The Falls Farm to talk to farmer Christine Ballinger about the importance of our bees at their farm. Jennifer also interviewed Lily Whitaker about her series of artworks created in collaboration with our bees.

But the main focus of the ABC story was the work we do to relocate and rescue bees. This is our video of that removal job from a garage ceiling in a Maleny home. The bees had been present for at least 12 months, and the whole process took us about seven hours to remove.

It turned out that this colony was ready to swarm as I found two queens in the nest. It was immediately evident which was the mother queen as she was much larger and calmer. Having only recently emerged from her queen-cell, the new queen was probably yet to take her mating flight judging by her size.

The full ABC Landline story can be viewed here.
